Centralia SINA Members Learn About Area Foster Care Programs
Southern Illinois Networking Association (SINA) met on May 31 at the Centralia Recreation Complex. President Mike Chambers introduced Michelle Moreno from SPERO as the speaker for the morning. Michelle spoke on foster care as well as other programs that they offer.
Michelle spoke on the high need for foster families in our area. She said that many times people mentor the children and that leads to becoming a foster family. Families have to go through classes, background checks and home visits before they become a licensed foster family. This process usually takes six months.
She said that SPERO needs foster care for children ages 12 to 18. Families need to be committed to doing this and be very loving and caring with the children. The children definitely need positive role models in their lives.
The Spero Foster Care program utilizes foster parents for youth within the Southern Region of Illinois. Their foster parents receive a high level of training and support to provide specialized care for this vulnerable population of youth.
In explaining what makes Spero Foster Care different, Michelle mentioned the following:
• Monthly training and support for foster parents;
• Regular staffing and support from the SPERO foster team;
• Engagement opportunities with other foster families;
• Lead foster peer support when needed;
• Being a part of a team with a face based mission and a vision to provide hope health and healing.
SPERO’s mission says it all: “Honoring God, we envision communities where people are physically, emotionally and spiritually healthy. We offer hope, health and healing by providing Christ-centered human services to meet the ever-changing needs of individuals, families and communities.”
Michelle put out an appeal asking people to please help Spero get much needed foster families by either being a foster parent themselves or by helping spread the word among friends, family, work and church.
